Access control is the hardware and firmware that physically unlocks a door — controllers, keypads, readers, and the software that manages credentials. Membership software holds the answer to who should have a credential right now: who paid, who booked, whose card just failed. Facilities need both, and the value is entirely in the connection between them.

Why isn't access control enough on its own?
Access-control systems manage credentials, not relationships. They can tell you a code opened door 1 at 6:04am; they can't know that the person holding it cancelled last month or that their card failed on Tuesday. Somebody has to tell them, and if that somebody is a person with a spreadsheet, it doesn't happen reliably.
Why isn't membership software enough on its own?
Because it can't open a door. It knows exactly who's current and who booked what, and none of that reaches the lock unless something carries the message.
What does connecting them actually change?
Access becomes a live function of payment and booking status rather than a manual list. A lapsed membership revokes itself, a refunded booking kills its code, and a new member's credential exists the moment they sign up — with no one maintaining anything.
- Automatic revocation. Cancellation or a failed payment ends access without a person acting.
- Per-session codes. Pay-per-visit customers get a code scoped to the window they paid for.
- One entry log. Entries reconcile against members and bookings instead of anonymous PINs.
- One bill. Facilities commonly pay separately for an access subscription and a member system.
Do I have to replace my access hardware to connect them?
Usually not. Most cloud-managed commercial controllers expose an API that can create and expire credentials, which is all the connection requires — the keypad on your wall stays where it is.
